Where It All Started

The year was 1956. Occurring on the summer of this year was the Dartmouth Conference, famously recognized for the birth of Artificial Intelligence.

This event was held at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, US; bringing together researchers interested in the field, marking the official beginning of AI as a field of research.

In the conference existed the expressed belief that:

"Every aspect of learning or any other feature of intelligence can in principle be so precisely described that a machine can be made to stimulate it."

As a result, this conference led to the development of new proposals of how machines can use language, form abstractions and concepts, and solve problems that could traditionally only be solved by a human.

2. Development of Fundamental Algorithms

Researchers, by this point, had developed foundational AI algorithms. Notably, someone named 'Arthur Samuel' created a program (one of the first of its kind) that learned to play checkers better than its creator.

Following this feat was the creation of the GPS (General Problem Solver), with the intent of designing a program that could evolve into a universal problem-solver.

1. Expansion of Research & Funding

Following the conference in 1956 was a surge in AI research. Universities across the US (as well as other parts of the world) began establishing AI Labs, with the goal of attracting funding and talent.

This era was also referred to as the "Golden Years" given that it experienced major enthusiasm and curiosity, and investment from government agencies in the US and UK.

3. Early A.I. Programs

The 60s and 70s witnessed the creation of several AI programs, spanning ELIZA (a natural language processing program that simulated a psychotherapist) and SHRDLU (a natural language understanding program that could manipulate virtual blocks through typed commands).

--> this was like communicating with a much less advanced ChatGPT, or AI Agent, but still incredibly cool for the time

4. Symbolic A.I.

Much of the early research in AI focused on symbolic approaches, which involve manipulating symbols and using rules to create intelligence.

This approach dominated AI research until the 1980s and led to advancements in human cognition and developing expert systems (or programs that make real-life decisions based on a set of programmed rules).

7. Technological Renaissance

One of the earliest approaches of mimicking how the human brain work was through Neural Networks.

They were first introduced by Warren McCulloch in 1943, initially representing simple models capable of basic, logical functions. By the 1980s, the development of the backpropagation algorithm by Geoffrey Hinton and others enabled for the creation of multi-layer neural networks to learn complex patterns (beyond just regular statistics) through extensive training.

The neural network model was created with the intent of modeling the human brain, and its neurons and inner functions.

Driven by the availability of massive, new loads of data (big data), advances in hardware (more powerful CPUs and GPUs), the refinement of these original algorithms, the creation of machine learning frameworks, and the increase in theoretical understanding of convergence, generalization, and the efficiency of algorithms, was the 2000s spark in Artificial Intelligence, and a renaissance era in AI Research.

This spark accompanied the modern era of AI, featuring applications like speech recognition, image processing, autonomous vehicles, and more.

5. Machine Learning

In the 80s and 90s was a new shift. This time, programs moved towards statistical approaches and Machine Learning, mostly in response to the limitations of Symbolic AI.

This breakthrough was formed from the learned understanding that intelligence did not need to be hard-coded and learned through logic, but can also be learned from statistical methods.

Probability theory and statistics became fundamental as they permitted the handling of probabilities and making decisions based on the patterns found in data. (hence, one of the most well-known algorithms, Linear Regression)

Present-Day A.I.

Now, in the current day era, we see Artificial Intelligence being applied in all sorts of industries. These include:

  • Automotive

  • Finance

  • Retail

  • Manufacturing

  • Entertainment

  • Agriculture

  • Transportation & Logistics

  • Cybersecurity

Chances are, you'll likely find even longer lists of industries, but these are the primary ones.

However, we've additionally seen the rise in new concerns regarding AI following its immense and rapid advancement and progression.

Artificial Intelligence only keeps getting better.

Recent advancements, like Generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs) -which you might recognize as popular models like ChatGPT, Gemini, or DeepSeek- are just the tip of the iceberg. In reality, there's so much opportunity.

Just as promising is robotics. It's eventual implementation and success is inevitable. Soon enough, in time, the requirement of human labor for performing all sorts of tasks will be unnecessary and potentially even futile.

Although not everyone chooses to implement it, it all comes down to a matter of choice, and whether or not you're willing to make the change.

And it will only proceed to improve. That's why I chose to start early, rather than later (compared to anything else).
